MANKATO, Minn. -

The Greater Mankato Rotary Club has handed out their annual Service Above Self Awards. The award recognizes those who go above and beyond serving their community.

Karen Wahlstorm was one of the recipients. She's a retired schoolteacher actively involved in early childhood education and the Children's Museum of Southern MN.

Wahlstrom says, "I've always worked with children and there is a lot to do with children in Mankato and building strong families and the Holsteins museum of southern MN is just such a good fit for me."

For the first time this year a groups was recognized, the Kiwanis were rewarded for their massive undertaking of transforming Sibley Park into a winter wonderland, collecting 13 tons of food for area food shelves and raising 22,000 dollars for local nonprofits.

Kiwanis Holiday Lights president Scott Wojcik says, "It's amazing to be honest, for anther device club to honor us as our committee for what we did for the project it is an amazing feeling that all of our hard work and the dedication we put into the project played off and it shows."

Also receiving the award, Jerry Bambery, a retired McDonald franchise owner and large supporter of the Salvation Army and Boy Scouts, among many other charities and foundations.
