Waseca sees 118 percent increase in Speeding Offenses

Posted: Updated:

431 more traffic stops last year compared to 2011. That's just one of the many new statistics released by the Waseca Police Department.

Speeding is also at the top of the list.

In terms of traffic enforcement, the Waseca Police Department logged some significant changes from 2011 to 20-12.

"I do have a pretty energetic staff, so my officers are very adamant in traffic enforcement and traffic safety, and I think that carries through to the numbers," said Capt. Kris Markeson of the Waseca Police Department.

The biggest percent increase on this stat list involves the number of speeding offenses.
In 2011, there were 248, but last year that same figure jumped to 541, a 118 percent increase. This despite the fact Highway 14 traffic is now routed around the city.

"The more we're out-and-about, the more we find," said Markeson.

"It sounds like it's increased dramatically, but on the other hand, if you're speeding, you're speeding, I mean I've deserved tickets occasionally," said Ken Borgmann of Waseca.

Also on the list were the number of narcotics-related crimes. That figure jumped 88 percent from 2011 to 2012, with 164 more incidents. Markeson says that stat is concerning.

"It does concern me, I think it should concern everybody," Markeson said.

Borgmann says any additional police presence can't hurt the community.

"I think in this day-in-age, any extra enforcement is acceptable," Borgmann said.

On the flip, side, authorities say the number of crashes dropped 32 percent from 2011 to 2012.
