Democratic congresswoman Katie Hill, that has been accused of having a sexual relationship with a staffer in breach of House of Representative’s principles, announced her resignation on Sunday.
“It’s with a broken heart which now I announce my resignation from Congress,” Hill said in a letter published on Twitter.
“That is the toughest thing I’ve ever needed to do, but I think it’s the best thing for my constituents, my neighborhood, and our nation,” she wrote.
“That is exactly what has to occur so the decent men and women who encouraged me will no more be exposed to the pain imposed by my husband and the brutality of hateful political operatives who appear to happily offer a stage to some monster who’s forcing a smear campaign,” the letter stated.
The House Committee on Ethics declared Wednesday it was investigating allegations that the California Democrat — who’s going through a divorce “could have engaged in a sexual relationship with a person on her staff”
Hill has allegedly admitted to a connection with a campaign staffer but refused with one with a part of her staff.
