The stabbings happened in the Arndale shopping center in the center of the city. The mall has been evacuated as armed police hurried to the scene.
“We can affirm that five people are stabbed and taken to hospital,” Greater Manchester Police said in a statement.
“In these early stages, we’re keeping an open mind concerning the motivation of the dreadful incident and the situation as we understand them.
“Given that the location of this incident and its character, officials from Counter Terrorism Police North West are leading the analysis as we ascertain the conditions.”
They said a guy in his 40s was detained at the scene on suspicion of severe attack. Pictures posted on societal media revealed officers having a stun gun on a single person.
David Allinson, manager of the mall, also told the Manchester Evening News that the center was evacuated.
The town was the place for Britain’s most deadly militant attack in recent years after a suicide bomber killed 22 people in May 2017 after a pop concert by Ariana Grande in the Manchester Arena, not much from the Arndale center.
