A bus driver at south-west France was abandoned brain dead after being attacked in a dispute with passengers wearing face masks, according to police sources.
The driver, in his job, was beaten and severely hurt in Bayonne after refusing to permit a man with no mask to board the bus.
The motorist had asked four passengers, who had been on the bus without any masks, to eliminate.
A guy in his thirties was detained on Sunday evening and four other people were taken into custody on Monday, Bayonne’s public prosecutor said.
Wearing a mask on public transportation is mandatory at post-lockdown France.
The bus network, that functions Bayonne and the neighboring towns of Biarritz and Anglet, was seriously interrupted on Monday following the episode, according to the community’s site.
Many buses failed to leave the depot on Monday morning, by which several dozen motorists expressed their despair and anger following the catastrophe.
The mayors of both Bayonne and neighboring Anglet have ensured drivers of the”complete solidarity”.
“We’ve seen a particularly violent and barbaric action,” explained Jean-René Etchegaray, Bayonne’s mayor.
Etchegaray added his hope” that the perpetrators will be brought to justice and the penalty would be severe” to ship”a substantial signal to the whole population”.
