President Donald Trump was suddenly escorted with a U.S. Secret Service agent from this White House briefing room as he had been starting a coronavirus briefing Monday afternoon. He returned minutes later, stating that there was a”shooting” out the White House which has been”under control”
“There was a real shooting and someone’s been taken to the hospital,” Trump said. The president said the shots were fired by law authorities, stating he considered the person who had been captured was armed. “This was the defendant who was taken,” Trump said.
Trump said that he had been escorted into the Oval Office from the representative. The White House was put on lockdown after the episode.
The shooting happened near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue just blocks from the White House, according to two sources with knowledge of the situation that wasn’t authorized to talk openly about it. Law enforcement officials were trying to ascertain the defendant’s rationale.
The defendant was moved into a nearby hospital, but their condition wasn’t immediately known.
Trump commended the job of Secret Service employees for their job in keeping him safe. Asked when he had been shaken from the episode, Trump asked colleagues: “I do not understand. Can I look rattled?”
