Discover the unique Ancient churches of Romania’s Distant Maramureș Area

Romania’s remote coastal area of Maramureș includes a distinctive architectural design, in which tall, tower-like wooden churches with shingled roofs dot the landscape.

Incredibly, a number of them are 400 years old.

A few of those churches, built with local pine, are on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
