Europe is stepping up the battle against internet child sexual abuse, an issue which seems to be getting worse especially during coronavirus lockdowns.
The European Commission is proposing a set of steps to bolster law enforcement capabilities to assist kids to escape abuse and also to arrest the perpetrators.
Ylva Johansson, the EU’s Commissioner for Home Affairs, stated that there were indications that child sexual abuse has been growing”hugely” through the lockdown.
“You will find very worrying indications that this may be exploding throughout the corona catastrophe,” she explained.
1 important step would be to ensure increased collaboration at an international level.
“We can observe that where we’re effective is when Europol works with police forces in member countries and with all the police forces in different countries outside Europe,” says Johansson, “we can monitor the abusers and we could get and launch and rescue the kids.
Commissioner Johansson also stated she’d’not exclude the possibility of additional legislation’ for technology businesses. But she added that collaboration with social networking giants would also be significant to fight the proliferation of illegal material online.
For Commissioner Johansson the question of making the web a safe place for kids is your utmost priority.
“We’ve regulation that it is compulsory, to discover fraud issues, so I believe if we could protect copyright problems that I believe we can even protect kids.”
The initiative comes soon after a high profile case in Germany where authorities published an announcement on June 6 about discovering a suspected child abuse ring and arrested 11 individuals in Munster.
The investigations back to some situation from 2018. An unidentified person had supplied data comprising child sexual abuse across the net. This resulted in an IP address, which then caused the farm in which the 27-year old principal defendant functioned as an IT expert.
“Kids have rights and we’re obliged to safeguard them and we’re not doing this great enough,” said Johansson.
