Guitar legend Eddie Van Halen expired on Tuesday after a”lengthy and tough struggle with cancer”, his household has confirmed.
“He was the best dad I could request. Every moment I have shared with him off and on point was a present.
“My heart is broken and I do not think I will ever completely recover,” he wrote.
Produced in 1955 Amsterdam, in the Netherlands, Van Halen and his family relocated to California when he was only six. He along with his brother, Alex, equally heard the piano from a young age but switched to drums and guitar in their adolescents.
In 1972, together with vocalist David Lee Roth and bassist Michael Anthony, the 2 brothers set what would later be called Van Halen, which immediately established itself as a staple of this Californian rock scene.
Eddie’s guitar virtuoso whose blinding rate, innovation, and control propelled the group into one of hard rock’s main collections.
The group released its first record in 1978 and then proceeded to release records on a yearly timetable –“Van Halen II” (1979), “Women and Children First” (1980), “Fair Warning” (1981), and”Diver Down” (1982) — before the monumental”1984,” which hit No. 2 on the Billboard 200 album charts (just behind Michael Jackson’s”Thriller”). Rolling Stone rated”1984″ No. 81 on its list of the 100 Greatest Albums of the 1980s.
“Eddie put the smile back into rock guitar, in a time when it was getting somewhat brooding. Also, he frightened the hell out of a million guitarists across the world, since he was so damn great.
For much of his career, Eddie Van Halen composed and experimented with noises while high or drunk or both. He disclosed he would remain in his hotel room drinking vodka and snorting cocaine whilst playing into a tape recorder. (Hagar’s 2011 autobiography”Red: My Uncensored Life in Rock” portrays Eddie as a savage, booze-addled vampire, residing within a garbage-strewn residence.)
“I did not drink to the celebration,” Van Halen told Billboard. “Alcohol and alcoholism have been personal things to me personally. I’d use them. The blow-off keeps you awake as well as the alcohol reduces your inhibitions. I am convinced there were musical items I wouldn’t have tried were I not in that emotional condition.”
Van Halen is one of the best 20 best-selling artists ever and the group was inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007. Rolling Stone magazine set Eddie Van Halen in No. 8 in its listing of the 100 best guitarists.
Tributes quickly began pouring in on societal websites with Nickelback composing: “The world lost an icon, an innovator, showman, virtuoso, master songwriter and possibly among the greatest inspirations to understand how to play guitar”
Brian Wilson, the co-founder of the Beach Boys, stated: “I feel awful”.
“Eddie was such a fantastic guitarist and I recall how large Van Halen was, particularly her at L.A. Love and Mercy into his loved ones,” he added.
Black Sabbath’s Geezer Butler also paid tribute on the web. “When I thought 2020 could not get any worse, I hear Eddie Van Halen has now passed. So shocking”
“One of the funniest, down to earth man I’ve ever met and toured with. A real gent and accurate genius,” he wrote.
