Italy and Portugal celebrate Liberation Day Beneath lockdown

Italian President Sergio Mattarella indicated the day by placing a wreath in the unidentified soldier war ministry in Rome.

Nevertheless, under lockdown, Italians staged Bella Ciao, the anthem of this anti-fascist immunity, and waved flags out of their balconies.

Portugal also celebrated the 46th anniversary of its own Carnation Revolution if the fascist regime of António de Oliveira Salazar was overthrown in 1974.

It was partially inspired by powerful autonomy movements in Portuguese colonies like Angola.

In Lisbon, parliament held a formal service with a reduced variety of MPs.

This year’s anniversary is exceptional: to the very first because the revolution Portugal has needed to announce a state of crisis within the coronavirus epidemic.
