The earthquake struck on a depth of 10 kilometers, the USGS added.
It struck 125 kilometers from Lucea, Jamaica.
The quake could be felt strongly in Santiago, the greatest city in southern Cuba.
Belkis Guerrero, that functions in a Catholic cultural center in town said they believed that the seats proceed but there was no apparent damage in the core of the colonial city.
However, the mind of Cuba’s national seismological agency stated there wasn’t any severe harm.
Many buildings in South Florida closed as a precaution based on officials.
The quake was felt at the Cayman Islands.
Dr Stenette Davis, a psychologist in a Cayman Islands hospital, said she’d seen manhole covers ignored from the power of the quake, and sewer bursting to the road, but no more significant harm.
