Mexico admits Penalizing El Chapo’s son after’Poorly Intended’ Performance

Mexico’s president faced a firestorm of criticism Friday because his security forces confessed they detained kingpin Joaquin”El Chapo” Guzman’s son, subsequently introduced him when his cartel reacted with an all-purpose gun battle.

Admitting his troops performed a”poorly planned” performance, Defense Minister Luis Sandoval stated they temporarily arrested Ovidio Guzman — among many sons conducting the Sinaloa drug cartel because their father had been extradited to the US at 2017 — but released him after being clubbed.

“This was a badly proposed plan,” Sandoval told a press conference at Culiacan, the western city of 750,000 individuals which was turned in an urban war zone Thursday.

He included that the police “officially detained” Guzman, 28, among nine kids”El Chapo” fathered with three sisters.

The six hours of clashes left civilian and seven soldiers dead, and three authorities injured, officials said following an emergency cabinet meeting in Culiacan, the country capital of Sinaloa, the Guzmans’ bastion.

Heavily armed cartel gunmen surrounded the home at which Guzman has been held Thursday day and found a huge machine-gun attack on assorted areas of the town, sending terrified residents fleeing for safety and leaving the roads strewn with blazing vehicles.

President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador defended the choice to spare Guzman.

“I encourage the choices which were made. The problem turned into very hard and several taxpayers’ lives were in danger,” he told a separate press conference.

“You can not fight fire with fire,” added the leftist leader, who said Mexico was behaving on a US request for Guzman’s extradition, that it obtained in September 2018.

However, the episode turned what was a challenging week on the safety front — together with just two gun battles that killed 28 people — right into an entire nightmare for its leftist leader.

“That is a tragedy in whatever way you look at it,” tweeted safety adviser Alejandro Hope.

“What happened is the drug cartels are more successful than the Mexican authorities. That is bad,” anti-narcotics specialist Mike Vigil, former head of global operations for the US Drug Enforcement Administration, told AFP.

They stumbled upon the ground of the lower house.

Security Minister Alfonso Durazo denied officials had awakened Guzman’s launch together with his cartel.

The authorities also faced criticism because of its communications that were disgusting.

Durazo originally said the gun battle erupted when soldiers on a regular patrol occurred upon Guzman.

Lopez Obrador, however, called it a projected performance completed using an arrest warrant. Sandoval stated there was no warrant.

The authorities, which originally released just hazy details, took about 18 hours to acknowledge publicly that it had seized and published Guzman.

“El Chapo,” 62, was sentenced to life in prison last July at New York to get trafficking countless tons of heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine, and marijuana into the USA over the duration of a quarter-century.

But, his cartel is still one of the most effective in Mexico.

His extradition unleashed a first period of uncertainty in the team, as Ovidio along with his brothers waged war using cartel co-founder Ismael”El Mayo” Zambada to get management.

However, the problem has stabilized to some reluctant truce.

The Guzman brothers have attempted to fill their dad’s shoes, but anti-narcotics specialists depict them as showy party boys that have very little ability to conduct the company side of their cartel.

Lopez Obrador, who took office in December 2018, has fought to rein from the barbarous violence racking Mexico.

The nation has enrolled over 250,000 murders because the government controversially deployed the military to fight drug cartels in 2006.

This year seems on track to set a new homicide listing, together with 23,063 murders as of August.
