Even a tiny crowdfunded satellite is now the primary’ spacecraft’ to be emptied solely by the power of sunlight.
The craft, LightSail two, successfully unfurled its solar sail Tuesday.
Much like the end thrusts the sails of a ship ahead, the satellite is plagued by the drive of particles, called photons, by sunlight.
The performance was postponed several times so the successful launching of its own solar sail brought pleasure to the American business supporting the project.
The solar power will stay in orbit around the Earth and, if all goes well, it’ll slowly increase its altitude as a result of the pressure of solar energy.
