An individual bodyguard of Saudi Arabia’s King Salman was shot dead and seven others injured, including security forces, during an altercation in a friend’s house, authorities said Sunday.
General Abdelaziz al-Fagham that had been frequently viewed by the king’s side died Saturday evening at the western town of Jeddah, authorities said in a statement carried by the official Saudi Press Agency (SPA).
“Pagham was seeing his friend at his house in Jeddah when (an) acquaintance, Mamdouh al-Ali, entered the house,” it stated.
“The conversation involving Fagham and Ali escalated… Ali abandoned the house, came back carrying a gun and fired in Fagham, injuring others in the family, a Filipino employee, and brother of the home’s owner.”
Al-Ekhbariya state television reported that the episode was triggered with a”private dispute,” without providing further information.
Ali himself was murdered, and five security personnel wounded in a shootout once the defendant” refused to concede,” SPA said.
It included that Fagham died in hospital from his injuries and an investigation was launched.
The general, near the king, has been well known among Saudis.
