India’s Siril Verma stunned top seed Darren Liew of Malaysia at a hard-fought three-game competition to get into the men’s singles third round of their Vietnam Open badminton championship here on Thursday. Siril, who’s ranked 97th in the world, battled hard for 52 minutes for past world no.22 Liew 17-21 21-19 21-12 at another round duel.
Siril will face Chinese qualifier, Lei Lan Xi, to get a place in the quarterfinals of the BWF Tour Super 100 tournament.
Another Indian to make it into the men’s singles third round was seed Sourabh Verma. Sourabh needed to dig deep to find the greater of Japan’s Kodai Naraoka 22-20 22-20 at a game that lasted 54 minutes.
But it was curtains for third seed Shubhankar Dey, that endured a straight-game 11-21 17-21 defeat in the hands of unseeded Malaysian Jia Wei Tan.
India’s effort also finished in the men’s doubles event following the set of Arun George and Sanyam Shukla dropped 13-21 11-21 to high seeds Lu Ching Yao and Yang Po Han of Chinese Taipei.
