There is a spate of departures in the DHS in recent months that have stabbed its leadership positions. The vacancies abandoned the Republican Trump’s government without a supported successor to incoming acting Secretary Kevin McAleenan, whose resignation was announced a month.
“I place in an excellent man who is highly admired, and he is acting at the moment. We’ll see where that goes,” Trump said if asked by reporters in the White House on Friday when Wolf is another DHS secretary.
White House spokesman Hogan Gidley stated McAleenan would resign after Nov. 11 and Wolf would subsequently assume that the position.
Wolf will take charge of the section as Trump pushes his immigration crackdown from the run-up into the 2020 election.
The secretary plays a visible and crucial part in the execution of Trump’s enforcement schedule. However, Wolf, who formerly had been a top aide to former secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, has maintained a low profile throughout his period at the government.
Democratic Representative Bennie Thompson, head of the U.S. House Homeland Security Committee, said in a statement that the appointment of”somebody without the essential experience only points to the disorder which has plagued DHS because the very first days of this Trump administration”
Immigration hawks had driven for Trump to appoint additional candidates, such as acting U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Director Ken Cuccinelli and behaving Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Mark Morgan.
“It is not like [Wolf] will go down and tear the fence up and allow people to swarm in,” Krikorian said. “He is not likely to have a fire in his stomach for executing the president’s schedule.”
Ali Noorani, executive director of the non-partisan National Immigration Forum, compared Wolf’s strategy to this of McAleenan, who participated in both Democratic and Republican lawmakers during his period at the government.
“He comes across as thoughtful, ready to hear “
Wolf was criticized by immigration hawks too for previous lobbying jobs for Indian technology firms that endorsed the growth of temporary overseas employees.
Sara Blackwell, a Florida-based lawyer who supports limitations on these work visas, known as Wolf’s appointment”an affront to the American worker.”
Trump could nominate either Cuccinelli or Morgan to a permanent foundation, which could please his foundation. However, Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell talked in April of the”lack of enthusiasm” for Cuccinelli as a potential candidate.
