The Turkish performance against Kurdish militants in northern Syria has started, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Wednesday.
“The Turkish Armed Forces, along with the Syrian National Army (rebel groups supported by Ankara), only started #OperationPeaceSpring,” Erdogan composed on Twitter in English.
He explained the offensive targeted Kurdish militants and the Islamic State team in northern Syria.
“We must protect against the introduction of a terror corridor across our southern boundary, and also to bring peace to the region,” he wrote.
Turkey has been planning military actions against Kurdish forces in northern Syria because of their ties with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), which has fought a bloody insurgency against the Turkish state since 1984.
